Screens for Learning

Screens have become a part of everyday life, including the way or children learn. While they offer exciting possibilities for learning like simulation or multimedia projects, they also introduce challenges such as distraction, overuse and online safety risks. Knowing the best pedagogical uses that address broader understandings of children’s screen use is important. That is the focus of this project.

This Screens for Learning (S4L) project aims to help students, families, and schools navigate the opportunities and challenges of educational technology. Led by a team of researchers from 11 universities across New South Wales, our goal is to better understand how students use screens at school and at home, and to share practical strategies that foster effective use of screens for learning.

What We’re Doing:

  • Gathering Insights from Students and Adults: Through surveys, focus groups, and classroom observations, we’re exploring the perspectives of all stakeholders – students, parents, teachers, and school leaders from across NSW.
  • Creating an Evidenced-Based Toolkit: A set of easy-to-use resources will be developed to help schools and families ensure technology effectively and safely supports learning.
  • Empowering Communities: We’ll share these resources widely through professional development events for educators, as well as community information sessions for parents.

Our mission is to support student learning by helping everyone—students, parents, teachers, and school leaders—feel confident about using digital devices wisely. We believe that, with the right tools and guidance, technology can be a powerful ally in education and a positive force in young people’s lives.

We will be sharing our findings on this website in early 2026, so please stay tuned.
